QR코드는 1994년 덴소-웨이브라는 일본 회사에서 개발되었고, QR은 Quick Response라는 뜻이다.
다음과 같은 모양을 갖고 있다.

일본에서는 매우 보급되어 있어서 일본의 휴대폰은 QR코드 리더기가 기본 내장되어있다.
특허권 자체는 덴소-웨이브가 여전히 소유하고 있으나 라이센스의 제약을 받지 않고 무료로 사용할 수 있다는 장점이 있다.
